NMC Revalidation process

reflective discussion nmc_revalidationReflective discussion is the part of NMC Revalidation where you require help with another NMC registered nurse. This discussion should cover your five written reflective accounts in relation the NMC Code.
You can have reflective discussion with only a NMC registrant. Why this is significant? Because, your Confirmer for your Revalidation can be your line manager who is not registered with NMC but with some other professional body. If your confirmer is an NMC registrant, this discussion can be a part of your confirmation process of NMC revalidation. But, if your confirmer is not an NMC registrant, you need to have a session with a NMC registrant before you proceed with confirming of your NMC revalidation.

Reflective discussion is one of the most rewarding elements in NMC revalidation process.

Reflective discussion in NMC Revalidation

Who can you have the reflective discussion with?

This must be a nurse, midwife or nursing associate with an effective registration with the NMC. This means they cannot be subject to any kind of suspension, removal or striking-off order at the time of having the discussion.

It could be someone you frequently work with or someone from a professional network or learning group

Generally, this does not need to be someone you work with on a daily basis. He or she does not need to undertake the same type of practice as you. Also, they does not need to be on the same part of the register as you. In short, a nurse can have a reflective discussion with a midwife or nursing associate and vice versa.

It is for you to decide the most appropriate person for you to have this conversation. That person can be either senior or junior to you.

Recording your Discussion

You must make sure that the nurse, midwife or nursing associate with whom you had your discussion signs the form and records their name. Make sure you note down NMC Pin, email, professional address including postcode, contact number of your discussion partner. You also need the date you had the discussion and a summary of the discussion. You should keep the completed and signed form for your records.

The discussion summary section of the form must not include any information that might identify an individual, whether that individual is alive or deceased.
